PLINT Fretting Tribometer - True Fretting Rig with the Right Approach
Regardless of the tribological tests we wish to perform, the mass, stiffness, method of actuation and load application all have significant influence on the results produced by a given design of test machine.
The design of fretting test machines presents a number of special problems in particular in respect of precise control of amplitude and mid-stoke position. Designs for high temperature applications or for hostile environments present challenges in respect of material selection, high frequency applications require considerable care in the design and selection of instrumentation and signal conditioning in order to avoid frequency response and phase angle errors.
The DN 44 Dry & Lubricated Reciprocating Sliding & Fretting Machine incorporates a servo hydraulic actuator driven by a high frequency analogue controller, which derives its set points via a 16 bit control and data acquisition card from a standard PC running COMPEND 2000 software. Real time adaptive control features provided within the software allows high precision control of the actuator when working against highly non-linear loads. Sine, square, triangular and random waveforms may be programmed and, depending on the physical capabilities of the hydraulic system, oscillating frequencies up to 200 Hz may be controlled.

DN 55 High Temperature Dry Sliding & Fretting Machine
The DN 55 High Temperature Dry Sliding & Fretting Machine comprises a special short stroke, minimum trapped oil volume, servo hydraulic actuator, mounted vertically on a massive cast iron base. The actuator incorporates hydrostatic bearings, which, in combination with the minimized oil volume, allows high frequency and short stroke operation. The test assembly is located vertically above the actuator and comprises two fixed specimen arms supported on flexural pivot bearings, which are in turn mounted on linear flexure assemblies. Motion in a vertical direction is restrained by piezo force transducers.
Technical Specifications
- Type of Movement: Sine, Square and Triangular
- Load: 5-2000N
- Resolution:+/- 0.2 microns
- Temperature: up to 1200°C
- Dynamic Load: 5.7KN
- Static Load: 8.6KN

TE 59 Induced Motion Autoclave Fretting
The 59 induced motion autoclave tribometer incorporates a simple, two-part, miniature autoclave, comprising a base plate and an upper body, mounted on a voice coil actuator. Specimen tooling and pipe connections are mounted on the base plate, leaving the upper body free to be removed, allowing the system to be set up and tested open. The complete assembly is vibrated about a vertical axis, inducing relative motion between two sets of moving and fixed specimen carriers. The fixed specimens are mounted on lever arms and are loaded against moving specimens by a stainless steel spring, tensioned between the levers.
Technical Specifications
- Maximum water temperature: 220°C
- Maximum pressure: 24 bar
- Maximum contact load: 2 N
- Stroke: 20 to 200 microns
- Frequency: 20 to 60 Hz
- Maximum working temperature: 250°C
- Design Temperature: 300°C

TE 77 High Frequency Friction Machine
TE77 long stroke reciprocating incorporates with an additional piezo actuator drive system. This is for performing fretting tests at strokes from 10 to 100 microns with frequencies up to 100 Hz with control of mid-stroke position and amplitude to +/-0.2 microns. The system includes a high pre-load piezostack, servo amplifier and signal generator, capacitance displacement gauge, 250 kHz 16-bit 16 channel multifunction ADC (not required if TE 77/HSD is already installed) and C-flex mounted moving specimen carrier. Simultaneous high speed data acquisition of friction force and displacement allows force-displacement curves to be plotted.
